SAVE ENERGY WITH MOBIL SHC™ GEAR 220

The gear oil Mobil SHC™ Gear 220 not only has excellent lubrication behaviour, but also the potential to save energy and reduce CO2 emissions. In our practical example from a customer in the plastics processing industry, switching to the high-performance oil reduced the energy consumption of Weber screw extruders by an average of 3.3%. Customer testimonial plastics industry

This customer testimonial is based on the experience of a single customer on Weber screw extruders. The actual results achieved may depend on the type of machine used and its maintenance, operating and environmental conditions and the lubricant previously used.

Initial situation

Plastic pipes are produced by extrusion in a plastics processing company. A mineral oil-based CLP 220 lubricant was used to lubricate the gear unit of the electric motor. The company wants to optimise production in terms of energy consumption and wear and reduce the operating temperature of the gears.

Recommendation

Our lubricant expert has recommended the use of Mobil SHC™ Gear 220, a synthetic high-performance gear oil of viscosity class ISO VG 220. The optimum viscosity-temperature behaviour and the chemical structure of Mobil SHC™ Gear 220 promise a reduction in power loss in the gearbox and a reduction in oil temperature. This extends the service life of the oil. In addition, the slight change in viscosity over the transmission temperature spectrum has a positive effect on wear in the system, as an optimum lubricating film is formed over the entire temperature range.

Field trial & evaluation

A field trial was carried out on a Weber screw extruder under comparable conditions using the mineral oil product and Mobil SHC™ Gear 220. An average saving in electrical power consumption of 3.3 % was demonstrably achieved when using Mobil SHC™ Gear 220. Switching to Mobil SHC™ Gear 220 results in energy savings of up to 40,000 kWh/year and system (based on 8,000 operating hours per year), depending on the material throughput/hour.

In addition, longer oil and system service lives contribute to lower oil consumption, a reduction in waste and maintenance hours, which means that maintenance and disposal costs can be reduced. Mobil SHC™ Gear 220 thus increases productivity throughout the entire manufacturing process and supports the company's sustainability goals.
